Biography
Doug Varley is a senior fellow at the Bezos Earth Fund, the philanthropy established by Jeff Bezos to fight climate change and the loss of biodiversity. Prior to becoming a fellow, he served as general Counsel, interim CEO, and interim COO.
Before joining the Earth Fund, Doug was a member of the Washington-based law firm of Caplin & Drysdale, where he served most recently as President and head of the exempt organizations practice. For more than 25 years, he has worked with national and international nonprofit organizations on a wide range of legal matters.
Varley has served on the boards of the National Audubon Society and Earth Justice. He taught a course on the regulation of political speech by nonprofits at Georgetown University Law Center for many years. He holds bachelor and law degrees from the University of Virginia and a master's degree from the University of Chicago.
